What We All Know, What We All Forget: Art, Nature, and the Human Spirit

This website exists to introduce a book about the essential importance of the arts and the natural world in human lives throughout our history. It claims that our relationships with them can and must continue to ground and restore us today. It is an appeal to our ongoing experiential knowledge of ourselves and of the world, a knowledge we can still trust.

The book presents ideas and observations in combinations which suggest fresh approaches to ancient puzzles. I have quoted from many and various sources, and, when the subject is art, given precedence to the testimony of artists whose work I respect–- composers, sculptors, choreographers, theatre and film directors, as well as painters–- rather than to the opinions of critics and historians, although they and other "experts" are also quoted, often with gratitude.

The website provides images of some of my own visual works, a group of my poems, and a visual/verbal project using 3-dimensional models to embody fundamental aspects of the grammar of Western languages.
